  1. Living in Coltishall since 2007. Formerly resident in Aylsham, so the footpath project is very interesting to me. I’d like to get involved in any way possible.

I have been living in Horstead since 2oo5 and have great interest in local history. I am also involved with the Documentation team of The Museum of the Broads and am helping to create an Archive for the Village News letter The Marlpit.
We have all seen the image of “Zulu” being man-handled around Buxton Lock, but it is never mentioned that Clifford Allen, the owner of Allens Boatyard at Coltishall, took his men up to Buxton and was instrumental in the portage of “Zulu” around the Lock. A great feat even by today standards.

      Re my previous post.
It was Allens boatyardbut it was Clifford Allens family as he was only 4yrs old at the time, sorry for type error.

I think, although I stand to be corrected on this but they do get the credit in the newly published book Sail and Storm, the History of the Aylsham Navigation. You are of course right about this and their role was crucial. At the Coltishall event on the 26th somebody came up to the stall and had a photograph of the men involved and was able to point out his grandfather amongst the work gang hauling Zulu.

I also attended the event, i was with The Marlpit and The Museum of the Broads people.
It was indeed a well arranged and well supported event.
Thank you for your reply about Allens yard. I purchased the Wherry to Aylsham DVD and it does give credit to Allens Boatyard. Many Thanks.
